Video: Dan Patrinellis’ Whitewater Kayaking Pin on Icicle Creek

Dan Patrinellis was wearing a helmet camera when he got pinned on a low-water run of Icicle Creek about a week ago.  Here’s his video – it took a while for him to get the throw bag, and he said the hairy moment came when he pulled his spray skirt and the boat went deeper because it filled with water (just take a look at the crushed boat at the end of the video).

For the record, Dan is one of the few people on earth that you can take on a 7 hour dead-of-night car trip through the backwoods of Idaho without wanting to throw him from the vehicle by 5 a.m.  Or maybe that’s just me. :)  Anyway, we’re all really glad he’s OK.

  • No kidding Dan, that all-night jaunt was a great way to kick off the trip – good times!

  • Wow, good things he wasn’t upside down when he got pinned, and good thing the crushed part wasn’t where his legs were. That video’s pretty nuts. I didn’t even see exactly what pinned him.

  • I couldn’t see it either, but I think he just hit a pin rock under water full on at the perfect angle and got lodged. No kidding about being upside down, I swam once through Boulder Drop and my boat got pinned upside down 2/3 of the way down, it took us 10 minutes to get it loose – really made me think about how crummy it would be to still be in your boat. (But not something I want to think about too much or I’d never leave the house.)
